Mr. Wilde's Garden

Oscar Wilde has been one of my favorite writers for a long time. The Importance of Being Earnest was the first play I read by him, and basically fell in love. After that I devoured every piece of his work I could get my hands on from The Picture of Dorian Gray to his fairy tales, poetry, and essays. While I'm sure you know that Wilde is quite quote-able, I just had to share one of my favorites:

"Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and a richness to life that nothing else can bring." - Oscar Wilde

I love this quote because it's both uplifting and it puts responsibility on the reader. Your life can be like a beautiful, vibrant garden full of gorgeous flowers, but not without effort. You need to purposefully create, find, and accept love to maintain your grounds and enjoy the views. At the end of last year, I entered a Spoonflower contest and I used this quote as my inspiration. The aim was to design a 2014 calendar to fit on a tea towel. The design you see above was my entry. Since my goals this year are to spend time doing things I love with people I love I thought it was an appropriate mantra of sorts. I had lots of voting help from my friends and family, but unfortunately, I did not win. I'm still pleased with my design, though. And that's what counts, right?
